Living like Bacteria

Bacteria grow exponentially so long as there are plenty of nutrients and resources exceed wastes. When growth from nutrients starts equaling the inhibition from waste products, their populations level off. As bacteria continue to use nutrients in this phase, they enter a stage of large scale population decline.

We have been growing exponentially recently, thanks to all the new found resources on the planet and our knowledge of using them. Our population has increased from 2 billion to 7 billion in the last 100 years.

What happens when the resources are all used up? Are we already seeing the waste buildup fighting back? Can we find wisdom found wanting all through this resource rich feast and avert the destiny of a bacterial colony?
